Moving from Sahel Sounds over to indie rock stalwarts Matador may seem like a curious choice for a man who doesn’t “know what rock is”, but as is the case with his previous albums, prodigious Tuareg guitarist and songwriter Mdou Moctar absolutely shreds across Afrique Victime. The spirited title track draws together contemporary Saharan music and the rugged, prog psychedelia of Hawkwind into a masterclass in riffing against the ravages of colonial power.
