Jazz Is Dead falls deeper down the rabbit hole of unsung greats with the fifth release of this on-going series. Helmed as always by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, the tragically overlooked hero of Jazz Is Dead 005 is Doug Carn, who first rose to prominence in the 1970s, pioneering fusion and funk as he went. Known primarily as an organist and pianist, this disc sees Carn careen across the keys in some stellar modern interpretations of his classic works with renewed rawness. Some tunes scarper and stumble nimbly into dissonance, as others send warm brass soaring.
