Brooklyn musician and producer Robert Toher, the mastermind behind Public Memory, continues his mining of the public unconscious with Ripped Apparition. If you’ve heard his 2018 release Demolition, you’ll know that Toher’s fascinations lie with the murky territory between techno and coldwave, but Toher injects an oddly cheerful pop sensibility to his infernal craft this time around. His sweetly menacing vocal brings to mind Black Moth Super Rainbow levels of uncanniness on ‘Butcher’, while ‘Epigone’ contains some King of Limbs-era Radiohead iciness. The tundra of synths and drum machines are still frosty, but a ray of sunshine has been let in of late.
