On her debut solo release Venus Volcanism (Rena Rasouli) brings the folk songs of her native Crete into the modern day. However, there is a twist - the tunes of Rizitiko were traditionally sung by men rather than women. Rasouli transforms these melodies into moving contemporary lullabies by combining them with thick, droning keyboards, found sounds and large amounts of reverb. It makes for a hugely evocative listen, one that will stir the soul.
