The Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess comes through with an album of grandiose indie-pop in the form of I Love The New Sky. This is an LP which draws heavily from songwriting visionaries of the 1970s and 1980s - the influence of Harry Nilsson, John Cale and Paul McCartney’s solo material of the period can all be heard in the sweeping songcraft and ornate arrangements. Burgess himself proves a continuously captivating figure up front, and his positivity and charisma are the glue which help piece the album together. From the ramshackle stomp of ‘Empathy For The Devil’ through to the Ariel Pink-esque hypnagogia of closer ‘Laurie’, I Love The New Sky is a brilliantly life-affirming listen.
