On his latest record for Athens Of The North the jazz pianist and bandleader Greg Foat ropes in his pal James Thorpe for a set of post-library compositions. While many of the easy-on-the-ears cuts on Photosynthesis could easily serve as environmental or discrete music there is also a sense of haziness to these tracks that makes them slyly beguiling. For instance, the manner in which cuts like ‘Platform Game’ and ‘Balloon Ride’ drift into the ether on pluming synths and pitter-patter electronic drums is reminiscent of Air and Lemon Jelly. The result is a cerebral and dreamy set of downtempo electronics.
