The latest Shinichi Atobe drop on DDS (Mica Levi, Equiknoxx) is a double-LP of minimal club fare. One can read the title of Heat in multiple ways. It signals a record full of club fire, that’s for sure - in the hands of the right DJ every one of these seven tunes is dancefloor gold - but it also signposts a certain aesthetic to the listener. This latter point is amplified by the arid quality of the cover artwork. These tunes have an airless, sun-stroked quality to them. The manner in which the low-key tech-house/deep house grooves here loop for minutes at a time without offering much in the way of variation imbues them with a strangely hypnotic quality. Think Gerd’s ‘Palm Leaves’ after being left out in the midday sun.
