Fans of Optimo will already be familiar with the dub-fogged techno of Mr. TC and Whilst. Optimo’s relationship with Glasgow’s Green Door Store is well-documented at this point, but the GDS’s link with Ghana’s Tafi Cultural Institute is less common knowledge. In November 2016, TC and Whilst travelled to the centre in Tafi Atome to record this mini-LP with local musicians. Outside Rhythm sees the pair’s music blend with Borborbor and Agbadza drumming techniques as well traditional Ewe songwriting structures. The results are heady and rich, ranging from loping sing-songs like ‘Deka Wor Wor’ to potent synth-and-drum workouts like ‘Cantata’. All proceeds from the record go to funding the building of the new Ghanaian Door Studio in Tafi.
