The man who brought us, as head-honcho of The Only Ones, the classic ‘Another Girl, Another Planet’ steps out again with his first set of songs in two decades. How the West Was Won is an album that greets you like an old friend, full of wisdom and familiar ease. This might be something to do with Perrett’s voice, as laconic and rum as ever; it could be his lyrics, reflecting on everything from life-long love (‘An Epic Story’) to a world that has changed a great deal in his 65 years (‘Man of Extremes’); the intimacy that is forged by having his two sons in the band probably helps a bit too. But ultimately, the timeless quality of the songwriting is what makes How the West Was Won such a winner.
