The latest work in the Boomkat Editions series that has already anchored releases by DJ Marfox, Elysia Crampton and Lorenzo Senni is a singular piece from Canadian composer Kara-Lis Coverdale. Her first release since 2015 LP Sirens, Grafts is a slow-burning drone opus in three movements that unfurls over more than twenty minutes. The piece’s shifting sands move through gorgeous Eric Satie-esque piano exploration (‘2c’), warm micro-jazz (‘Moments in Love’) and the sort of slow-burn post-minimalism of Arthur Russell’s Tower of Meaning (‘Flutter’). A work of quiet beauty and tightly-coiled energy, Grafts is a wonderful effort that deserves to be appreciated in full.
