Having risen the ranks of the cult Pictures imprint through Kompakt, Dauwd arrives on Ninja Tune's electronica-focused Technicolour sub-label with a sterling full-length Theory Of Colours.
Much like Techni's Jay Daniels album from a few months back, Dauwd's long player moves a classic sound into bold, newly rounded shapes. Where his Kompakt and Pictures releases were a cross of low-fi beats and deep house rhythms, Theory Of Colours extracts these styles and adds a layer of trip-hop style fuzz to the album. This mix calls to mind the work of Lee Gamble on the bubbling techno of title track Theory of Colours, while the mid-morning shuffle of Glass Jelly is pure Sound Signature in effect. His love of Terry Riley and Raymond Scott while drawing parallels between hazy Detroit house and early German Krautrock.
