German musician Samuel Rohrer is best known for his percussion work as part of AMBIQ Trio and his work at the helm of the arjunamusic imprint. This LP sees Rohrer go deep into his own craft, improvising across a variety of tuned and untuned percussion to create an album brimming with curious grooves and ethereal textures. ‘Microcosmoism’ kicks the LP off with a propulsive locked groove that, while peculiar, is a real head-nodder. Elsewhere ‘Lenina’ and ‘Sunclue’ would have you convinced that some studio trickery was going on, dealing as they do in wide-ranging ambiences and periods of weightlessness, but you would be mistaken - Rohrer’s press release tells us that the LP underwent minimal processing, with most of the sounds created in real time. An odd and oddly charming release.
