Following their last album Mungodelics and a collaboration with Todd Terje on ‘Alfonso Muskedunder’, Mungolian Jetset return to Oslo-based label Smalltown Supertown with a new EP, A City So Convenient. Each of these retro-futuristic tracks packs so much in and goes through multiple subtle reinventions without ever sacrificing the groove. ‘Quintessential Trips To Bergen’ builds elegantly, with beach bar percussion, wah wah guitar, duetting horns and a synthetic choir, before breaking down into a heavy synth jam at the finish line. The title track is more tentative, feeling its way gently through the runtime. Those gorgeous minor chords call to mind Johnny Jewel’s Italians Do It Better label. On the flip, ‘San Frisco Speedhall’ has a cosmic touch worthy of any Scandinavian nu-disco master, and builds to a surprisingly sizzling climax. The ‘San Disco’ version adds a bouncy bass line, and doesn’t wait nearly as long to ramp up the intensity.
