Machinedrum joins forces with Melbourne-based artists SK Simeon and Yaw Faso (formerly Yaw Mulatto) for the Maskya EP on Big Dada. Taking influence from from Simeon’s Ugandan heritage, the pair manages to join the dots between African and Jamaican styles whilst absorbing influence from contemporary music. Here, the duo drop two vocal cuts a piece; whilst Machinedrum’s ingenious electronic touches raise these ruddy dancehall cuts to greater plains, such as the woozy glitches on joyous cut ‘Doper than Dope’ or the liquid breaks on ‘Ram Dancehall’. Yaw Faso flaunts a more emotional vocal delivery, dropping verses over the skipping snares on ‘All Of My Life’ and linking up with the melancholic chords on ‘Memories’.
