Techno demigod Anthony Child rests his cherished Surgeon alias with a rare release under his own name, following up his 2013 NNA tapes release with Electronic Recordings From Maui Jungle Vol 1 for Editions Mego. Taking residence on the tropical Hawaiian island, the Birmingham artist immerses himself in the tense tropical jungle together with his modular system to explore the textural and timbral fundamentals of electronic music. Throughout, the jungle’s oppressive influence permeates each piece, such as the muggy, humid drones of ‘A New Moon’ and ‘Eternal Note’, which flaunt a dense, layered sound; or the jittery insectile expressions on ‘Down In The Gulch’. Whilst usually difficult to accomplish, Child’s seamless fusion of natural and pure electronic sound works to accentuate the best qualities in each source, resulting in an engaging and well-conceptualised piece of meditative sound.
