Berlin-based footwork wizard DJ Paypal caught our attention with his ludicrous, 30-track compilation of Drake edits, his appearance on Long Clothing & We Buy Gold’s trance-goes-footwork collection Trancework, and his contributions to Glasgow underground institution LuckyMe’s Advent Calendar. The appropriately-titled Buy Now EP is his first solo release for LuckyMe, demonstrating his taste for oddball funk and his wry sense of humour. This time, disco goes footwork, with over-caffeinated synth patterns gliding atop rolling, ants-in-their-pants rhythms. Soulful vocals get pitched-up and fast-forwarded, while chunky 909 hi-hats are laid over accelerated saxophone solos. While it’s mostly pure party music, there is a quiet moment in the form of ‘Sonnade’, which hints that there’s maybe more to DJ Paypal than we’re otherwise hearing.
