London-based instrumental hip hop producer The Last Skeptik returns to Barely Breaking Even with I Don’t Even Like You. Following last year’s full-length for the label, Thanks For Trying, the new EP sees him focus on the electronic aspects of his arrangements. On the opener, he turns the chopped up vocal sample of Buddy Miles’ ‘The Segment’ into something utterly rhythmical. ‘Cheerio’s’ synth lead has digital written all over it, whereas the strings, the jazzy trumpet and the burbling off-tune piano of ‘Me & My’ nod at his leftfield influences and bridge the release with his previous, more orchestral releases. Vocalist Femme and rapper Dream McLean lend their voices to two of his works, showcasing The Last Skeptik’s versatile production style.
