Becoming label mates with the likes of new grime star Visionist as well as footwork pioneers Traxman and DJ Rashad, Lisbon’s Marlon Silva aka DJ Marfox signs to the as yet always visionary Lit City Trax. With Lucky Punch, the label doesn’t break with its innovative tradition: DJ Marfox deconstructs the style of kuduro, an uptempo, polyrhythmic type of dance music that originated in Angola in the 1980s. Angola being a former Portuguese colony, the genre was practiced and performed in Lisbon, where a new scene of DIY Afro-Portuguese dance music has been emerging over the past decade. DJ Marfox comes out as one of its forerunners, and his take on kuduro is brutal and frantic. ‘Lucky Punch’ makes do almost entirely with drum machine sounds, paying homage to the genre’s truly rhythmic soul.
