Colin ‘Mr. G’ McBean is a clubland legend. One half of ‘90s techno warriors The Advent, he was instrumental in bringing tribal yet soulful techno to a wider audience. While his music is rooted in fastidious repetition, this is a musician who is radical at heart - he was once known for booking techno DJs to play on reggae soundsystems. Fittingly, there are echoes of dub’s earth-shaking properties amid his viscerally analogue, four-to-the-floor grooves, as evidenced throughout ‘Tutonic EP, ’ released on Don’t Be Afraid. The title track is guided by rotor-blade drones and thudding beats, and ‘Rum Trip Up’ boasts a bassline that could bounce you into next week.
