New York-based experimentalist Ezekiel Honig takes to Nicolas Jaar’s Other People imprint to offer up his latest EP. Paragraphs, Honig’s first release on the likeminded label, manages to feel complete, avoiding the sometimes flustering effect that long-short-short format releases can have. On expansive opener ‘May 11’, a loping, irregular beat compels the listener to follow along Rilke-style, through an endlessly morphing soundscape comprised of urban field recordings and sombre synths. ‘Drafting Hindsight’ pairs austere piano with solemn trumpet and oddly affecting sub bass frequencies, while ‘Here We Are’ serves as a coda, bringing back the inner-city samples and droning organs for a stirring, rather neat conclusion.
