Lilacs and Champagne, Portlanders Emil Amos and Alex Hall, return to the eclectic Mexican Summer label with a bold concept EP. Shower Scene, set to be the first in a series of records that imitate different musical eras and styles, takes on film and TV scores of the 1970’s. This is immediately evident on the sleazy, laid-back title track, and on ‘Le Grand’, which starts as funky incidental music and builds to a rousing climax, thanks to some showy drumming and electric guitar. The duo explores, and elaborates on, gritty crime show scores (‘The Door’), riveting opening credit themes (‘Sensations’) and eerie, nail-biting pieces (the Moondog-esque ‘Maple St’).
