Rabih Beani’s Morphine imprint complete their series of reissues of the work of American synth maestro Charles Cohen with a compilation of his work on CD for the first time in the previously all vinyl run. It is intriguing to note the composer moving in and out of templates one might associate with club music, with ‘Dance of the Spiritcatchers’ maintaining a techno propulsion and ‘Velcro Dance’ charming with a Krautrock motorik beat. The most impressive cuts, however, are when Cohen is at his most deranged: ‘UTEP1’ recalls Shangaan Electro in its crazed rhythms, while ‘The Street’ uses snatches of environmental noise to beef up layers of synth squeals.
