Bristolian Arkist returns to the Apple Pips label with two strong deep house offerings. ‘Summer Shimmer’ feels wide-eyed and optimistic, led by an omnipresent bouncy synth line which periodically bubbles over into deep piano chords and lush falsetto vocals. On the B-side ‘Whipper Snapper’ feels no less buoyant, putting similar elements to effective use; this time, however, Arkist’s piano samples get trapped in an incessant spiralling loop which recalls the shimmer and gloss of Four Tet’s most ecstatic work.
