The second chapter of the experimental saxophonist, composer and all round maverick Matana Roberts’ ‘Coin Coin’ project arrives with a considerable degree of expectation, given the widespread acclaim heaped on the first instalment. ‘Mississipi Moonchile’ continues the composer’s examination of the American tradition which has shaped her musical understanding and combines a depth of research with a sensuous and genuine commitment to the subject matter which makes for a deeply gratifying collection of pieces. The addition of a male opera singer on tracks such as ‘Confessor Haste’ make this record much more than folk pastiche, while ‘Invocation’ channels ‘A Love Supreme’-era Coltrane convincingly. A fabulous, multi-layered collection of pieces.
