Jeff Mills is back on Axis Records for a new EP of narrative-heavy experimental electronica entitled The Other Maria. To Mills, The Other Maria represents that darker, edgier side of ourselves, the voice inside you try to ignore that’s capable of mass destruction. It manifests itself in the turbulent, vertigo-inducing sound design on the title track which seems to almost taunt the listener in its whipping motion. There is a reprieve though in the form of the closing calm ambient track ‘Freder’s Reality Switch’, but even that track’s siren-like synths suggest further turmoil lurking just beyond the bend.
