Ideologic Organ release this 1986 recording, made in Seattle, of Dhrupad master Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. Dhrupad is a branch of Hindustani classical music that has evolved over the centuries from devotional music to court music and back again. Dagar - the nineteenth generation of his family to specialise in the Dhrupad derivation Dagar gharana - was a player of the rudra veena, a bass relative of the sitar. Together with Dagar’s son, Ideologic Organ are pressing some archival recordings of some of Dagar’s best raga recordings. This one focusses on the Raga Yaman, one of the most fundamental of all the ragas. Dagar’s evocative playing, full of innovative microtonal phrasing, is wonderful to hear.
