Ideologic Organ are dropping two archival recordings from esteemed Hindustani classical musician Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. Both of them are taken from concerts in Seattle in 1986, though Ragas Abhogi & Vardhani was made at a private house concert while the other album issues from a public performance. Dagar’s instrument is the rudra veena, a bigger and bassier derivation of a sitar, and these recordings demonstrate his mastery of the Hindustani classical form known as Dhrupad, a genre that is said to show the raga in its purest form. Working specifically in the Dhrupad sub-style of Dagar gharana, Dagar’s playing draws a fantastic expressive range from his instrument.
