Throughout the ‘90s and early ‘00s, Simon Walley crafted intricate, yet stunning productions that seemed destined for recognition. Thanks in part to a growing following around his work as CiM, Dutch label Delsin continues to clue the world in with Reference, the project’s lone long-player that wrangles Walley’s knotty sensibilities into miniature form. 2000 debut Reference is expansive both in length and approach, its 24 tracks coming in short bursts of frenetic energy and longer atmospheric passages in equal measure. The calming, idyllic tones of ‘By a River’ work alongside busier tunes like the robotic funk of ‘Clean Code’ to build a lush world of sound. It’s about time CiM got its due. Standouts like ‘Isempty’ and ‘Geosat Fill’ build lush worlds in under two minutes, while the album’s longer tracks gracefully build atmosphere around glitchy flourishes. Releasing in full for the first time on vinyl, there’s never been a more ideal time to catch up on CiM’s under-sung vision.
