Directed by Pablo Larraín, written by Steven Knight, and starring Kristen Stewart, Spencer explores the strife of Diana, Princess of Wales’ later years. Scored by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, the soundtrack is a joint baroque classical / free jazz exposition, with eternally descending arpeggios characterised by sorrow and doubt. The ambient oceanic swells of ‘Home / Lacrimosa’ provide some much needed relief, but not before hyperventilating saxophones bookend rushes of electrifying strings, tension audibly throttling the wooden bodies of each violin and cello. It’s a musical conversation between Diana’s dramatised public and private lives, and an evocative and explorative album all on its own.
