Astral Industries return from their intergalactic travels with another polished gem of unjustly overlooked deep techno music. Monolake’s Gobi was originally released back in 1999 on Imbalance Computer Music, home of many works by the German project, and stands out from the rest of its IDM siblings as a more ambient, mood-based work. Few discernible rhythms pass through Gobi save for the distant chirp of insects and a looming, breathy drone that recalls the sound of wind gently blowing over sand dunes. Akin to Jim O’Rourke’s Long Night in its sprawling intensity, you’re surely more readily able to lose yourself in the recording than its actual desert namesake.
