Not unlike the combined mega-album he made out of 2013’s Odyssey EP and 2014’s Sonne, Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles again documents a gradual process of advancement in his muscular electronic sound. He casts a much wider net this time, collating works from 2015’s Night Melody mini-album and 2020’s Articulation full-length. A straight line can be drawn between the likes of ‘Lone’ and ‘Articulation’, the former an extrapolation of kalimba-inspired dance music and the latter its full-bodied realisation with clacking snares and skipping synth phrases — which are later chopped-and-changed into further complex rhythms by Midori Hirano.
