Stenny’s debut LP Upsurge makes good on its title in the sense that this one of those records which gathers momentum as it goes along. Beginning with ‘Water Maze’, the sort of weightless atmosphere that Jay Glass Dubs would be proud of, Upsurge soon locks into a set of dubstep-tinged IDM grooves which balance innovative drum programming with wistful synths. Come the end of the record Stenny has gone full breakbeat, with drums clattering around the speakerbox (though the synths maintain an air of melody even at this point). Fans of Om Unit and dBridge should turn their attention Upsurge’s way.
