On Synth Expressionism/Rhythmic Cubism, his new LP for On The Corner Records, Jamal Moss pushes his sound hard. True, the Hieroglyphic Being project has always been a space in which Moss has taken the sonics of deep house, spiritual jazz, free composition and various other Afrofuturist idioms to extremes. However, there’s something about these wild grooves, with their controlled-chaos programmed drums and ecstatic frenzies of synth and keys, that is out-there even for Moss. If Miles Davis had lived to see the MPC age we might have got something from him that sounded a bit like Synth Expressionism/Rhythmic Cubism.
