While UVB-76’s Pessimist may have started out with a series of drum ‘n’ bass releases on the label, recent years have seen the one born Kristian Jabs spread his wings and try out a variety of other sounds. However, on the Burundanga EP we find Jabs getting back to basics, turning in a pair of darkside jungle tunes along with the dark ambient entry ‘Lithosphere’. Both ‘Thug’ and Burundanga’s title-track are thrillingly moody, their skittering beats cloaked in delay and needling bass synths. Simon Shreeve (Mønic, Kryptic Minds) rounds out Burundanga with an industrial techno take on Pessimist’s 2016 tune ‘Paian’.
