Improvised in one take and recorded live in Johannesburg, Spaza is nonetheless a conceptual exploration rather than a mere musical project. The word “spaza” survives a number of historical permutations and political struggles, denoting independence and entrepreneurship on one hand, contested territories and the spectre of South African apartheid on the other. Spaza the album is an invocation; a darkly psychedelic cry to the universe — and places closer to earth.
