Eluvium (Matthew Cooper) is one of the artists with the most distinctive and varied catalogues in ambient music. A highlight of his career was 2004’s An Accidental Memory In The Case Of Death, a record which saw Cooper composing for solo piano. On new LP Pianoworks, Cooper repeats the trick - but this time he’s gone about things with different intentions.

This expansive set finds Cooper aiming to create music of beautiful simplicity with the express goal of engaging children, young people and others with no experience in piano-playing. Honing the pieces of Pianoworks over the course of a decade, Cooper has whittled down his compositional style to the bear essentials. The tender melodies spooled out by his right hand are augmented by spare accompaniment from the left, and the result is a poignant and uncomplicated style.

The obvious comparisons for pieces such as these are contemporary composers like Ludovico Einaudi and Ryuichi Sakamoto. However, the Eluvium sound here also reaches further back into the annals of classical composition - the languid interplay of melody and harmony here nods to Erik Satie, and any collection of keyboard music crafted with children in mind will always bear some relation to Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen.

Eluvium’s latest album Pianoworks is one of Matthew Cooper’s most generous and affecting collections to date.
