Plaid’s 2002 P-Brane EP demonstrates another moment of pure genius from the London-based duo, dealing in intricate, meticulous production and deep, lush melodies. First off is ‘Coat’ where lingering piano chords are buried deep under a weighted drum break and swathes of opulent strings; ‘Diddymousedid’ continues the same feel, mixing stocky drum processing and delicate keys. More complex is ‘Stills’, layering an electrified beat over an exuberant ambient background whereas closing piece ‘Mfaus’ is the grainiest of the set, driving forward at breakneck speed with plenty of playful accompanying computer interference.
