Wysing Polyphonic Festival, the respected Cambridgeshire music event that celebrates its eighth installment in 2017, chooses avant three-piece Ectopia to be the first signing for its new label arm. Commissioned to create a work for the label’s debut release, the three piece deliver a compelling seven-part suite that stands at the intersection of electronica, music concrete and electro-acoustic composition. Tracks like ‘Engrenages’ and ‘Head for Business’ pit stirring cello playing against moody, lumbering synth grooves, while forays into ghoulish spoken-word ratchet up the intensity of tracks like ‘Mutual Grief’ to breaking point. A record that pulls no punches, and thus ends up as a singular achievement.
