Steve Reich disciple Matthew Collings here teams up with the prolific Dag Rosenqvist (who you may know better as Jasper TX) for a record that spans the spectrum of what ambient music can be. Incorporating tape loops, found sounds and a plethora of synth tones, Hello Darkness is a record of great dynamic and textural variation. Tracks like ‘It Was Digital, and It Was Beautiful’ and ‘The Age of Wire and String’ follow a similar pattern, one where small cells of melody and gorgeous textures build and swell before being gradually consumed in a dizzying crush of distortion. Others, like ‘Hours and Days’ and ‘In My Muscles’, have a beautiful spareness to them.
