A new excavation from Soul Jazz explores the work of legendary ska and reggae producer Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd, focusing on his days prior to the foundation of the renowned Studio One label/production house, who set the agenda for ska and reggae to come. The compilation contains the Jamaican proto-ska, R&B, jazz, Rastafari and gospel music that Dodd helped produce on a variety of his early record labels, with the ‘Downbeat’ of the album’s title refers to Dodd’s Downbeat Sound System which ruled Kingston’s dance halls during the 1950s. Sleevenotes in the compilation come from Studio One scholar Rob Chapman. Released as a triple CD and as two separate double LPs.
