It’s now been over 2 decades since Soul Jazz Records principals Stuart Baker and Adrian Self compiled the now legendary post-punk compilation IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS RHYTHM. The expertly timed 2002 release shined a line on a crucial strand of UK music history seemingly right before indie rock bands across the pond were starting to claim influence. Placing scene heavyweights like Gang of Four, Throbbing Gristle, and Cabaret Voltaire alongside deeper cuts from acts like 23 Skidoo (who feature twice) was a canny bit of curation that raised profiles while showing off the immense depth of this (somewhat) short lived yet massively influential musical movement. Soul Jazz brings this important document back to wax for the first time in many years.
