Heavenly Sweetness continues to press up the good stuff on vinyl direct from the Èthiopiques vaults. Alemayehu Eshete first hit Western ears on the Buda Musique Volume 9 in the series and stands second only to Mulatu Astatke in contemporary recognition. However, where Mulatu represents the indigenous, deep and soulful Ethio-jazz tradition Eshete had half-an-ear on South Carolina, James Brown, FUNK. Chicken scratch guitar, bristling jazz drumming and wailing Hammond licks come together in that irresistible recipe that makes the feet twitch, the soul stir. In 2008, Eshete toured Europe with his peer Mahmoud Ahmed (also available on Heavenly Sweetness) and the pair –well into their seventies- continue to throw down the Addis Ababa flavour across the world.
