Piano virtuoso Chilly Gonzalez executes yet another humorous experiment in songwriting: Ivory Tower is the soundtrack to the 2010 film with the same name, which the Canadian musician co-wrote and stars in himself (It’s about a love triangle involving two brothers who fall in love with the same woman, played by Peaches, and are also competing in the same chess championship). Once again his jester nature is showcased in self-deprecating vocal lines such as "I’m a movie with no plot, written in the backseat of a piss-powered taxi”. The album was entirely produced by Boys Noize’s Alexander Ridha — one of Chilly Gonzales’ many regular collaborators; the pair released their debut album under the name of Octave Minds in 2014. Ridha embeds Gonzales’ cheerful piano chords in pop-y four-on-the-floor disco beats and funky bass lines on the one (‘You Can Dance’, ‘I am Europe’) and downtempo ballad contexts ('Final Fantasy’, ‘Bittersuite’) on the other hand, making the soundtrack an all-round affair.
