Written for a modern piece by choreographer Adrienne Hart, Music For Falling From Trees is Peter Broderick’s first dance score. Arriving via modern classical label Erased Tapes, it’s the soundtrack to a story about a patient in a psychiatric hospital who’s struggling to retain his identity. Broderick retired to his father’s barn and created its seven songs within three weeks using only his violin, his viola and a broken piano. Improvising around a small composed core, the sketches move fluidly – even the sound of the ticking clock on ‘Patient Observation’ stems from the Portland composer tapping on the body of his violin with his fingernails, while the electric shock the patient receives is illustrated by distorted piano chords.
