British-Japanese deep house queen Maya Jane Coles fully resurges as Nocturnal Sunshine with her first full-length under the dubstep moniker. Released via her I/AM/ME imprint, the self-titled album displays the emotional depth of her productions with a new livery: melancholic through and through, soft-edged synth pads colour her weighty sound in shades of rain. Both her guest vocalists’ singing and her own glacial voice appear fragile against the heavy-hearted bass parts that at times even suffocate the cleverly syncopated drum elements of her tuplet rhythms.
