Hamburg-raised and Berlin-based composer Nils Frahm declared the 29th of March to be the annual piano day — besides emphasising his position as one of the most relevant contemporary piano composers in the pop music context, this also initiated the support for the building of the Klavins M450, a 4.5m tall piano designed by piano builder David Klavins. The moving pieces of ‘Solo’ were conceived on the prototype of said model, and Frahm will donate all income it generates to the project. Listening to the colourful sounds the instruments produces when its cushioned hammers hit its long spring steel strings leaves no doubt as to why Frahm would go out of his way to make it accessible to as many ears and hands as possible. The love becomes audible in the immediate and intimate way in which it was recorded: you can hear how Frahm breathes in and out, and tenderly touches the keys.
