After a string of excellent releases on French imprint I'm A Cliché, Tel Aviv-based duo Red Axes make their debut on John Talabot’s well-respected Hivern Discs imprint with the Pil Sagol EP. Across each of the three cuts the Israeli outfit deploy tropical rhythmic assaults laced with befuddled melodies and quirks, leading off with the offbeat, brooding number ‘Todum Todum’, followed by distorted brass toots and rolling drum licks of ‘Me And Abra in Ruanda’. The pair saves the best to last with ‘Pil Sagol’, which is a true snake charmer, maintaining a steady driving pulse and littered with rickety percussion for psychotropic ramble into the wilderness.
