Mark Fell inaugurates his intriguing new 7” label Object Relations with a fascinating release recorded in Milan in 2014. The new imprint aligns its focus on bringing together a range of divergent artistic practices in order to create seemingly unimaginable combinations; here, Fell teams up with avant-garde cellist Sandro Mussida. Across the two pieces, Mussida’s deeply textured improvisational cello play is hinged to Fell’s convoluted, microtemporal drum programming that traverses between a series of constantly shifting time signatures. As always, Fell is keen to push the boundaries and limitations of the musical fields he often dominates and if this engaging debut is anything to go by, we’re expecting much more from this new venture.
