Through a mixture of simplicity and delicacy, Olafur Arnalds manages to portray despondency and hopefulness almost simultaneously on Variations of Static. The award winning multi-instrumentalist continues to capture a sense of Icelandic starkness on tracks like Haust and Lokaðu Augunum while opener Fok is powered by an emotive string section that is carefully placed to give the listener a glimpse in to the desolate landscape which is inhabited on Variations of Static. Heartfelt and enduringly compelling, this EP is rich in melody and loaded with a carefully crafted melancholia.
