Experimental Australian imprint Room40 present an intriguing project from Sydney sound artist Austin Buckett. Comprised of 30 one minute percussive loops made using sand paper and snare drums, Grain Loops looks to bridge the gaps between sound as art, noise and contemporary music which already blurs these lines. ‘4’, ‘5’ and ‘18’ could easily be twisted into noise-techno bangers, and ‘13’, ‘17’ and ‘26’ beg to be re-appropriated by hip-hop, drum & bass, and drone producers, respectively. Whether an artist searching for samples or a fearless listener looking to test the limits of repetitive musical structures, this collection offers plenty to wrap your head around.
